My Role as a Mystic Without a Monastery

In my class, Practical Mysticism, we explored our potential to become mystics in the world.  The goal was to find our own unique ways of acting as a beneficial Presence for every person with which we come in contact.  We were very supported in this exploration, with superior discussions in class and visits from practitioner Maurean Cunningham and ministerial candidate (and fellow Copper Canyon Elementary parent) James Peak.  After eight weeks of study, soul work and discussion, Diane asked us to each write an essay outlining our personal vision of our role as a mystic.  I'd like to share my essay:
I currently live my role as a mystic in the world by living my truth out loud, as authentically as possible. I interact with the public every day through my bead stores, and I have the opportunity to make those moments engaging, heartfelt and honest. Without needing to utter a word about God or spirituality, I have the chance to model conscious conversation, non-judgment and a focus on the positive. We can never know, when meeting a client, what else has happened in their day. This may be the only genuine smile, compliment or warm welcome they receive all day. Simply by being a model of love in the world, I strive to remind people that love is always an option. And I hope the love spreads.
I see myself growing into my mystical self by telling this truth more widely! I have a unique perspective, a distinctive voice -- I believe we all do -- and I have stories to tell. I really resonated with James Peak when he said that his mission was, “to learn as much as I can about God and the Universe, and then to communicate that message to anyone who cares to hear it.” As a part of this class, I started blogging about my experiences and adventures as a mystic out in the real world. I had no idea if anyone would care to read my writings, or if I was wise enough or knowledgeable enough, or frankly just “enough” to pull it off. My world is comically real sometimes, and things don’t always flow smoothly for me. But as I put my thoughts out there about staying focused on the Divine as the world swirls around me, I found people saying the most amazing things. “That really put things in perspective for me.” “You always seem to know what to say.” And, my favorite, “You should write a book.”
So I am going to follow my vision, so succinctly voiced by James. I’m going to continue my education in the Science of Mind in order to learn as much as I can about God and the Universe. I’m going to continue my spiritual practices in order to deepen into my relationship with Spirit. And I’m going to share the message, in my own quirky voice, with anyone who cares to be in the conversation.
